Die 5 archetypes when the focus is on using our acoustic materials

When choosing the appropriate acoustic material for your specific requirements, it is important to understand that the highest absorption values aren’t always the best choice. Instead, the materials’ properties and -ratings should be specifically tailored to the requirements of your room acoustics. There are common applications, for which you can find ratings from 0 to 6 (not suitable to well suited) for every one of our acoustic materials:

Application archetype 1: Church with high reverberation

For a church or rooms with similar reverberation, materials with high absorption values, particularly at low frequencies, are required. Our materials can help to reduce reverberation time and create a more pleasant acoustic environment.

Application archetype 2: Decorative application

In rooms where only slight adjustments to the acoustics are desired, fabrics with low absorption are ideal. Our velvets or echo velvets can contribute as an aesthetic improvement, without significantly changing the room acoustics.

Anwendungs-Archetyp 3: Verdeckung von Lautsprechern

The material covering a loudspeaker should let sound pass uncompromised. Materials with low to medium absorption are suitable, as they don’t compromise the sound quality.

Application archetype 4: Room dividers in seminar- and meeting rooms or offices

Materials with medium to high absorption values are ideal for room-in-room concepts in seminar- and meeting rooms, to minimize disruption of conversations through external noise.

Application archetype 5: Acoustic curtains in event halls or theatres

To muffle loud noises, comparable to a good entrance door, necessitates the combined materials that we fabricate with very high absorption values over the entire frequency range. Curtains of this type are particularly well suited for areas, that require high insulation.

You can create an optimum acoustic environment by considering the specific requirements of your room and selecting the appropriate acoustic materials. TÜCHLER is happy to help you find and implement the ideal materials for your project.

Precision when testing acoustics

TÜCHLER values precision and transparency. Our materials are all tested in accordance with EN ISO 354, whereby we consistently set the distance to the wall at 10 cm, as prescribed in the standard. Compared to other manufacturers, who occasionally test at greater distances than required by the standard, you can rely on our data providing a realistic assessment of sound absorption under standard conditions. When comparing data concerning the sound absorption class, the weighted sound absorption value alpha(w) and the frequency response, please take note as to whether the test conditions are identical.

Strict fire protection standards and approvals

Safety is our top priority. All our tested acoustic materials are flame-retardant, in most cases in accordance with EN 13773 and EN 13501, which are successor standards to DIN 4102 B1. The materials labelled "BS" are compliant with the British Standard and are specifically intended for use in the UK or Commonwealth countries that require this.

Added pleats and their effects

The absorption coefficient alpha(w) of our materials is tested both on smooth material and with 100 % added pleats. The addition of pleats significantly increases the sound absorption and, in some cases, can even result in a different sound absorption class. This double testing ensures that you have the necessary data to use our materials according to your aesthetic and acoustic requirements.

FAQs on the topic of acoustic materials

What are the advantages of TÜCHLER’s acoustic materials?

Our acoustic materials not only improve the room acoustics by reducing reverberation time, they also fulfil high fire protection standards and offer many design options with digital printing and blackout options, all with the aim of bringing safety and style to your room.

How does TÜCHLER guarantee the precision and reliability of acoustic tests?

We greatly value precision and transparency in all our acoustic tests. All our materials are tested in accordance with EN ISO 354, whereby we keep a constant distance of 10 cm to the wall. This guarantees comparable and realistic ratings for sound absorption.

Why are the highest absorption values not always the best choice for acoustic materials?

The “best” absorption value depends on the specific acoustic requirements of the application. In some cases, lower absorption is desired, to only slightly adjust the room acoustics, whereas in other cases, higher absorption values are necessary, to reduce unwanted reverberation or noise.

How does adding pleats influence the sound absorption of materials?

Adding pleats increases the surface area and mass per fabric unit area and significantly increases sound absorption. In some cases, this can even lead to higher classification for sound absorption. Those of our materials, that can be pleated, are tested both plain and with 100 % pleat allowance to supply precise data for your planning.

Which fire protection standards do TÜCHLER acoustic materials fulfil?

Our acoustic materials fulfil strict fire protection standards like DIN 4102 B1, EN 13773 and EN 13501. We also offer materials specially approved for the UK market, that comply with the British standard to ensure wide applicability and safety.

Does TÜCHLER offer customer specific solutions for acoustic materials?

Yes, we offer made to measure fabrication for many applications, including curtains, wall- and ceiling coverings, rotating housing and more. Additionally, individual designs are available through digital printing, to give every room a personal touch.

How do I choose the appropriate acoustic material for my project?

The choice of the appropriate acoustic material depends on the specific requirements of your room. Take factors into account like the desired absorption, aesthetic preferences, fire protection standards and the function of the room. Our experts are happy to help you find the appropriate materials for your project.

If I have acoustic material at my windows, can I still see outside and also let light into the room?

Yes, acoustic blinds like our Kiesel acoustic curtains offer a solution that improves acoustics without blocking the view from the window or dimming natural light too much. These fabrics are designed to provide a degree of transparency while optimising room acoustics. They are ideal for rooms where you want to combine the aesthetic benefits of a curtain with practical acoustic improvements.

Are acoustic materials available that will also darken my room?

Yes, we offer special blackout materials like SunBlock Soft, which combines excellent blackout properties with acoustic absorption. These materials are ideal for rooms that require a controlled lighting environment, as in media rooms, theatres or bedrooms, without compromising on the acoustic quality. They ensure calm and darkness and simultaneously offer effective sound absorption.

Can I have my own pattern or design printed on my acoustic curtain?

Yes, your personal pattern or design can be printed on your acoustic curtain. Many of our acoustic materials are suitable for digital printing, which means any pattern or design can be printed. The specific details for printability are to be found directly in the respective material information. This option allows you to create unique and personalized acoustic solutions, that are aesthetically pleasing and improve the room acoustics.
